GPCS Homecoming 2011
GPCS held their 2011 Homecoming, October 1. The day began with the GPCS JV Soccer Team taking on Grace Christian School. The GPCS JV Team won! This was followed by the GPCS Varsity Girls playing Calvary Chapel. This was a close game and GCPS Varsity Girls took a loss. Then the GPCS Varsity Boys played Acadia Christian School. The boys took a big victory. Then it was time for the alumni game. I heard it was fun, muddy, wet, soggy, etc. The day ended with food. Many thanks to all the volunteers. Thank you to all the alumni who came even though the day was rainy and wet!
GPCS Mourns the Loss of a Great Neighbor
Thomas Bakker died in his home October 6, 2011. Many of you know that he and his family lived next door to the school. The Bakker's sent their children to GPCS for a time. When their children were not enrolled, they continued to support the school. Tom at times plowed in the winter, reported lights left on, etc. He was also entrusted with a key so that outside groups renting our building could get in. He was a great neighbor to GPCS and we will greatly miss him.
GPCS Chapel
Many of you remember Chapels at GPCS. This year, GPCS is beginning some new initiatives. GPCS hopes to have a whole school Chapel four times through out the school year. It is an opportunity for seniors to pray with kindergartners, juniors with third grade, etc. The other new idea with secondary Chapel, is each grade will do Chapel. In this first quarter at GPCS, the senior class will be presenting Chapel at the end of October. Pray for these initiatives as we hope to Glorify the Lord and have more students actively involved.

GPCS April Alumni Update
GPCS Mourns...
Mallory Allison Morse (GPCS Class of 2008)
Mallory Allison Morse (AKA Alice), 21, of Buxton, was called home to be with Jesus on Thursday, March 17, 2011. In the short time she was here she lived life to the fullest, unafraid to take risks and full of joy in her existence and her love for the Lord.
Mallory was born in Portland on Feb. 24, 1990. From a young age Mallory enjoyed playing the piano and singing. Music was a huge part of who she was. With an amazing ability to play anything by ear and a clear, sweet voice, she blessed anyone who had the opportunity to hear her. One of her favorite things was singing with her brother, Drew, while he accompanied her on his guitar.
Mallory's greatest love was serving Jesus. Her actions imitated Him as she ministered to all who knew her. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone, and her love for Jesus shone in her eyes. Mallory grew up at Grace Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, and for 10 years volunteered at the homeless shelter. After graduating high school Mallory moved to Boston, where she became very involved in Life Church, ministering in the nursery, mentoring teens, and participating in music.
Mallory attended Greater Portland Christian School (from third grade until she graduated) and Boston Baptist College. She planned to attend Colorado Christian College this fall to complete her music degree. Mallory was in the Honor's Society and won the Master Teachers Scholarship Award from GPCS in 2008 (her essay is on the school web site www.gpcs.net, click on Student Testimonials).
Mallory loved to travel, and by age 21 she had traveled all over Europe and to New Zealand and Australia. She loved animals, particularly penguins and kiwi birds. She loved to run, to jump off bridges, to go to the movies, to play DDR, to spend time with friends. She loved life, and she lived every second with passion and excitement.
Mallory's immediate family includes her parents, Chad and Rebecca Cram and brother Drew; father Glenn Morse and brother and sister, Gavin and Morgan Morse. Her extended family includes grandparents, Joseph Yuhas, Leslie and Linda Morse, and Harvey and Sandy Swanson. Her grandmother Delpha Yuhas went home to be with the Lord in May, 2010. Mallory leaves behind more friends than it is possible to name.
A celebration of Mallory's life was held on Friday, March 25, at 6 p.m., at Grace Baptist Church. Those who attended were truly blessed with 3 songs sung and played by Mallory that had previously been recorded. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations may be made to the Grace Baptist Church Youth Fund.
Two Alumni to Bike Across Japan
On April 6, Scott Keenan (GPCS ‘03) leaves for Japan to join Andy Marston (GPCS ’05) and another friend, Dillon Wilson. These three young men will be cycling the 2,200 mile (3,500 km) length of Japan to raise money to help bring hope and relief to people suffering from the earthquake and tsunami. Scott, Andy, and Dillon are funding the cost of the bike ride completely on their own so that 100% of all donations go directly towards the relief efforts in Japan through Samaritan’s Purse – a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. The guys have a goal of raising $10,000. If God is leading you to help the people of Japan, then please consider contributing through the efforts of our GPCS alumni, Scott and Andy. Please visit the trip website for information http://www.unframedworld.com/2011/03/send-aid-to-japan-in-one-click-share-to-care/. Scott has a video displayed on that page. January Athletics- January Update 2011
Varsity Boys Basketball:
GPCS boys basketball team has faced major problems all
year. Yet they are doing their best to remain positive with a
very depleted squad. They played very well in attaining their
second win of the season against Pine Tree Academy. The
record at the end of January is 2-11.
Leading the Lions is senior Ben Hammond. He has scored an
average of 15.4 points per game while grabbing 14.4
rebounds per game. This month he has had amazing games
of 25 and 23 rebounds. Junior Ryan Murray has played his
heart out in each game. The recent return of junior Jordan
Peters (broken wrist) has given team a lift as they go into the
last two weeks of the season.
Varsity Girls Basketball
We had a very successful month. Our record for the month
was 8 wins and 2 losses.
Some of the highlights include two wins at North Haven, which
is the highlight of our season so far. We had a great trip and
enjoyed having the boys team there with us. In our game
against Seacoast, Suzanne Gonzalez had 20 points and 16
rebounds, which we won by 7 points, 43-36.
Our toughest test of the season came against Waynflete, a
Class C team. We were down by 1 point at halftime, and
ended up losing by 12, but it was our best played game of the
year. Against Calvary, Liz Garland had 28 points. In our last
game of the month, we traveled to Isleboro and were trailing
by 4 at half time. The team did not allow them to score in the
3rd quarter and we won by 15 points. We look forward to our
last 4 games and getting ready for play-offs!
Jr High Boys Basketball
The month of January for the Jr. High Boys was marked by
huge comebacks falling just short. The most memorable game
was against the South Portland Celtics. Trailing by fourteen
points with six minutes left in the game, the guys came
storming back and had a shot at the buzzer to win that
bounced off the rim.
Sam Gleysteen, David Frye and Joe Imler have all elevated
their level of play and have been great contributors to the
team. Finally, Ben Roach was awarded a Boys and Girls Club
Good Sportsmanship Award for his excellent attitude and play
all season long.
Jr High Girls Basketball:
We began our Jr. High Girls season in the Gorham Rec
league. There are three other teams in the league. We began
with two wins against Gorham and Windham. After a tough
loss to Windham, we bounced back with a win against
Gorham, finishing the month with a 3-1 record.
This years team members include: Abby Morabito, Ashley
Imler, Jessica Smith, Marissa Lane, Ashley Dawson, Paige
Bouchard, Clarissa Jones (child of James Jones), Bethany Ruiz, Alanna
Haslem, Kaileigh Marston, Erin Turner, Natalie Smith, Grace
MacDougall, Emily Ingraham.
K-1 Basketball:
Kindergarten and first grade boys and girls are playing in a
league with Holy Cross, St Brigid and Cathedral.
The six week league consists of a one hour session each week. The
session is divided into two halves; a skill practice and a game.
Team members include Emma and Hannah Rogers, Nathan
Hatch, Isaac Shaw, Caulin Patterson, Sonny Elder, Olivia Mann (child of Kimberly Verrier Mann)and Ronan Anderson.
Elementary boys and girls in grades 2 & 3 have had a great time this
year playing basketball in a league with Holy Cross, Cathedral and
St. Brigids. While few in numbers, they are mighty in determination.
The kids have practiced basic basketball skills under the leadership
of their volunteer coaches, Jonathan Libby, Skye & Danny Patterson
and Doug Elder. They are showing great sportsmanship and are
already talking about playing next year! Team members include:
Owen Sanborn, Ben Hatch, Christian Patterson, Emily Libby (child of Jon Libby), Olivia Elder, Owen Mann (child of Kimberly Verrier Mann).

Alumni at GPCS
GPCS is always pleased to have alumni and former students return! We are thankful for Jared Bamford (class of 2006) volunteering as Assistant Coach for Jr High Boys Basketball this year. The Head Coach for Jr High Boys Basketball came to us by an alumnus too. Paul Harrell is the head coach and husband to Jennie Keenan Harrell (class of 2001). This month we have two Chapel speakers with GPCS ties. Mike Jones (former student with the class of 2006) came and shared his work with Jews for Jesus and some of his music too. Then the following week, Emily Johnson (class of 2006) came. She is currently serving as Miss Maine. She did Chapel for both elementary and secondary students. Andy Marston (class of 2005) is helping grade one with their Snuggly bear project.
